Please join us on the Sunday after Labor Day 9/12 for our annual get-together to celebrate the accomplishments of Democrats and the Democratic party over the last year. (The invitation is here.)

Same place (JMU's Festival), same time (5:30PM). And we promise to get you out before 9PM, on time, just like last year!

And, just like last year, John Glick and Steve Phillips will be joining us again- if you attended the Sept. 09 dinner, you'll remember that they were one of the highlights of the evening. Our headline speakers are Terry McAuliffe and Ward Armstrong, two folks the grapevine tells us are seriously considering a run for governor in 2013. Terry has been through the Valley a number of times; Ward Armstrong is the Democratic leader of the House of Delegates. Both are funny, terrific storytellers, and loaded with great ideas for the commonwealth. Come and give them a listen and a look. Harrisonburg City Council Candidates Sal Romero and Joe Fitzgerald and Harrisonburg Mayor/26th District candidate Kai Degner will also take the podium. As we're hoping to see as a special guest, 2009 Gubernatorial Nominee Creigh Deeds.

NOTICE OF HARRISONBURG CITY COUNTIL DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS
The Harrisonburg Democratic Committee will hold an assembled caucus beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2010, at Massanutten Regional Library, Harrisonburg, to nominate up to two candidates for the Harrisonburg City Council election to be held Nov. 2, 2010.
Any person wishing to seek nomination must pre-file with Alan Finks, Chair of the 26th District Nominating Committee, (540) 434-6140, or his designee, no later than 5 p.m. on May 5, 2010.
There is no charge for those wishing to attend and vote at the caucus.
Doors to the caucus will open at 6:30 p.m. for check-in. Any person attending the caucus, before participating in that caucus, shall sign a Caucus Participation Form stating that he or she is a Democrat, does not intend to support any candidate who is opposed to a Democratic nominee in the ensuing election, believes in the principles of the Democratic Party, and is a registered voter in the city of Harrisonburg. Caucus Participation Forms must be filled out at the caucus prior to participating in the caucus. At 7 p.m. the doors to the caucus will be closed and no person may complete a form and participate in the caucus after that time with the exception of those persons in line at 6 p.m.

Three local Democratic Committee topics in this email: Rockingham County Fair volunteers; Labor Day Banquet program ads; Monday, Aug. 10, meeting of Harrisonburg Democrats.

1. We need volunteers to staff the Democratic Party booth at the Rockingham County Fair, Aug. 17-22. Volunteers will hand out literature, answer questions, and assist the four Delegate candidates from the Central Valley. Mainly, we will remind our neighbors that Democrats are everywhere. 2. The program for the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Labor Day Banquet will reach up to 400 people just at the dinner. Health Care Forum Aug. 27

Democratic Forum on Health Care Reform, Thursday, Aug. 27, 7 p.m., Board of Supervisors Meeting Room, 20 E. Gay St., Harrisonburg.

We stand at a turning point, both as Americans and as Democrats.

Congress is in the midst of one of the greatest undertakings of our generation, reforming our health care system. Our health care system as it currently exists is unsustainable —fifty million Americans are uninsured and tens of thousands more are losing their insurance every week. Health care expenditures, now at 17.6% of GDP, are expected to be over 20% in ten years. Ever more insured Americans are facing bankruptcy as out-of-pocket expenses continue to climb.

All three House committees with jurisdiction over health care have reported out reform legislation, as has one of the two Senate committees. The legislation they are considering would cover 97% of the U.S. population and could restrain the growth in health care costs. Congress is now in its August recess, and whether or not we will get health care reform depends on what our representatives hear from us during the next month.

Polls show that Americans are confused. They understand our health care system is broken and needs to be fixed. Many Americans profess opposition to the solutions proposed by President Obama or Congress, but at the same time agree with those solutions when the proposals are described to them. Most Americans are also concerned that health care reform will help other people but that they themselves may be worse off under reform.

Republicans and conservative advocacy organizations are feeding this anxiety with misinformation. Republicans have proclaimed that health reform is their main chance to “break” Obama; they claim that it will be his “Waterloo.” They remember 1994, when the failure of President Clinton to enact health care reform was followed by a dramatic resurgence of Republican power leading to the Republican takeover of Congress.

If health care reform fails, Virginia will be the first state to feel the backlash. We are the first state to have elections following this fall’s legislative session, and if the Democrats in Congress fail, their failure will affect us directly and immediately.

If you want to hear what Congress is up to in health care reform, if you have questions or comments about reform, if you would like straight answers to the complicated questions reform raises, and, most importantly, if you want to know what you can do to help reform efforts, come to the Democratic Health Care Forum, Thursday, Aug. 27, 7 p.m., Board of Supervisors Meeting Room, 20 E. Gay St., Harrisonburg.

The discussion will be led (and this information was prepared) by Timothy Stoltzfus Jost, Washington and Lee University Professor, author of over one hundred books and articles on health law and policy, who has been closely following legislative developments throughout this legislative session.
